My name is Gretchen Himsl and I would like to serve as your HISD Trustee for District I.

I am the mother of two current HISD students and have spent the past nine years working in our schools as a parent, volunteer, and PTA president.  I currently work as a child policy advocate for a local non-profit organization, and as a reading tutor for English Language Learners. Earlier in my career I spent many years working on the state budget with the House Appropriations Committee in Austin.

I am running to bring my hands-on experience and broader policy experience to the school board, with the goal of giving every District I student an opportunity to attend a great HISD school, and graduate ready for college or a career. We are going to do this by:

  • Building vibrant learning environments at every school
  • Strengthening student pathways to success
  • Improving equity in state and local funding

I have seen first hand what our schools are capable of when teachers, administrators, students and communities work together, and receive the necessary support from the state and the district.  I also have seen how much work we still need to do.  I look forward to the conversation we will have during this campaign, and earning your vote for trustee.  Please join us by signing up for updates, putting out a yard sign, volunteering, or contributing.  Let's sharpen our pencils and get to work!
